Why dentists are now providing botox. Plus, therapeutic and cosmetic botox treatments available in Ladysmith, BC.

Though it varies slightly from province to province, nurses, doctors and dentists are the only professionals eligible to become certified as botox administrators in Canada. Since the province of BC approved dentists to administer botox injections in 2009, the popularity of both therapeutic and cosmetic botox treatments has risen significantly. Now, the community of Ladysmith and surrounding Vancouver Island communities can receive both therapeutic and cosmetic botox with Dr. Nadia Stymiest, Founder of Ladysmith Smiles.

Why should I go to a dentist for botox injections?

The most important thing to remember when you are trying to find the right cosmetic injector for you, is that you need to feel confident. Before committing to any botox injector, take the time to research and ask the right questions. Make sure you are comfortable, informed and confident in both the injector and the treatment.

When you think about heading to the dentist for a cleaning, it may not even cross your mind to inquire about botox treatments. However, dentists have a highly specialized university education in head and neck anatomy that allows them to understand how to safely and effectively treat patients with both therapeutic and cosmetic applications.

In addition to her extensive education in dentistry from Boston University and her experience practicing as a general dentist in the Nanaimo area since 2013, Dr. Stymiest continued to invest in her education, graduating from Pacific Training Institute for Facial Aesthetics & Therapeutics (which is considered the Gold Standard for botox injection training in Canada).

As your proactive partner in oral health, dentists have extensive anatomy training  and understand the impact of muscle contractions in the facial muscles—a key to effectively administering botox.  Dentists also understand the importance of reviewing your medical history and performing a complete exam; the importance of asepsis and always use sterile instruments or ‘once only’ disposables; and have appropriate liability insurance. The benefit of choosing a dentist for your botox treatment is that they will be able to discuss all of your aesthetic concerns regarding your teeth, smile and face.

What is botox?

Though Botox® is a brand name, it has become the more commonly used word for neuromodulators—other neuromodulator brands include Dysport®, Xeomin® and Nuceiva®. All four brands work relatively the same in terms of how they prevent muscle from contracting. Dr. Nadia Stymiest personally trusts and uses Dysport® with her patients at Ladysmith Smiles.

Botox or botulinum toxin, is used as a minimally invasive treatment to relax muscles by preventing the release of acetylcholine from  nerve terminals. There are a few different reasons an individual may opt for this treatment, so let’s discuss them in two main categories: therapeutic and cosmetic.

What is therapeutic botox?

While your mind might go straight to Tim Allen’s frozen face in Christmas With The Kranks, botox is also commonly utilized for therapeutic purposes such as: Bruxism (teeth grinding), Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD), and chronic headaches or migraines.

What is cosmetic botox?

When we think of botox in a cosmetic application, it is helpful to think of the skin like a sheet of paper. If the paper is folded repeatedly, the creases will become permanent. When botox is administered, muscles can not fully contract and therefore, the wrinkles and creases soften while future creases are prevented. Commonly treated areas for cosmetic botox are: Crow’s Feet, The 11s’ (between brows), forehead wrinkles and marionette lines.
